Wikileaks, an international non-profit media organisation, has revealed the United States of America's role in the June 12, 1993, election that was annulled by the military. The report, which recently released over 251,000 US embassy cables giving accounts of the US State Department's correspondence with its missions abroad, said that significant investments were made to midwife democracy in Nigeria in 1993.
The documents revealed the US role in the 1993 general elections and the June 12 impasse.
The documents further revealed that most of the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that were in the fore front for the actualisation of the June 12 election were sponsored by the US embassy in Lagos to mobilize Nigerians against the military junta.
